NEIGHBORS AND GUESTS
HAVE A GOOD TIME ON LANGLEY ROAD
 - Andrea Doremus Cuetara at oaksquare.com

Block parties can feel awkward and forced, or they can feel genuinely friendly and fun. Wild swirls of colorful pavement chalk decorating a street, tasty potluck dishes and lots of good stuff to drink, warm conversations and family guests, as well as elegant candle-lit, linen covered tables, each with their own gorgeous flower arrangement for a centerpiece, meant that the Langley Road Block party on Sep. 9th definitely fell into the latter category. Organizers Doris Walsh and Charlie Vasiliades, with help from others, have five years of experience creating this event. Boston Police officer Gary Adams was on hand with a cheerful smile.

Posters of old photos lined the street, providing a history of big events and changes on Langley Road over time. This included a series of shots from the blizzard of 1977. One table displayed Polaroids of almost every house on the street. Underneath each photo was space for party goers to add their names if they were recent arrivals. The history of each home's inhabitants was visible this way. It also provided an opportunity to remember those who had moved on. Toward the middle of the evening raffle prizes were awarded which included gift certificates and the truly beautiful centerpieces of freshly cut fall flowers from Amanda's Flowers in Brighton Center. Tina Mazerall Vasiliades' artistic eye was responsible for these flower arrangements, as well as the street design. In general, it seemed like a nice way to spend a warm Saturday evening.
