In September, 1998, representatives from the Brighton Boston Public Library and the Allston Brighton Healthy Boston Coalition met to begin talks about existing literacy needs and services in the Allston Brighton area. The result of these meetings was a plan to hold a Literacy Forum which took place in October, 1998.

This forum brought together interested individuals and agencies committed to increasing basic literacy - ESOL, Family Literacy, Adult Basic Education, etc. The Allston Brighton Literacy Coalition was formed.

Since then, over 20 representatives from at least 15 agencies and organizations have been meeting monthly to learn about existing literacy programs and services in Allston Brighton and greater Boston. These agencies include the Adult Literacy Resource Institute, Allston Brighton APAC, Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation, Boston College Neighborhood Center, Brighton High School, Brighton branch Library, Faneuil Branch Library, Head Start, Jackson Mann Community Center. Jewish Vocation Services, the Literacy Connection, Veronica Smith Senior Center, and One With One.

The Coalition is committed to sharing information and resources, and to help those in need of literacy services. Currently, the Coalition has published an easy-to-read listing of existing programs and services that is available to the general public. The Faneuil Branch Library has recently developed a Literacy and Foreign Language area which includes books in Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Vietnamese and Chinese. There are also Chinese and Russian videos, and literacy materials in both book form and mixed media. For further information about the Allston Brighton Literacy Coalition, contact: Paula Posnick at (617) 782 - 6705, or faneuil@bpl.org.
